Gold, Silver Prices Rise on Dussehra as Fed Rate Decision Keeps Markets on Edge
Gold and silver prices rise on Dussehra, with 24-carat gold at Rs 1,47,170 per 10 grams. Changing US Fed rate expectations, West Asia tensions and global inflation trends could shape the next move in precious metal prices.
In the international market, gold was trading at $4,163 per ounce, up 0.08%, while silver gained 0.56% to trade at $57 per ounce. Consumers planning to purchase gold or silver are advised to check the latest prices before making a buying decision.
The market is closely watching the US Federal Reserve’s decision on interest rates as it seeks to control inflation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has indicated ahead of next week’s meeting that interest rates could remain unchanged for now. Following his remarks, the probability of a 0.25% rate hike fell to below 20%, compared with approximately 67% at the end of last month. These changing expectations could influence gold and silver prices.
This week, precious metal prices have experienced sharp movements amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, crude oil prices reaching 0 per barrel and fluctuations in the rupee. Economic data from major economies worldwide is also playing an important role in determining the direction of precious metal prices. Market analysts say investors should closely monitor all these factors throughout the week.
According to several analysts, investors are currently exploring opportunities in equities, cryptocurrencies, energy and other commodities. At the same time, higher interest offered by bonds is making investment options such as gold less attractive because gold does not generate regular interest income. However, concerns about reducing dependence on the dollar, rising government debt and the challenges governments face in managing public expenditure continue to encourage major institutional investors to maintain their gold investments.
According to a Kitco report, gold holdings reflected in Bloomberg data reached 101.3 million troy ounces in October, their highest level this year. This represents a 5.3% increase from the low of 96.2 million troy ounces recorded on July 20. Gold holdings have also increased by approximately 2% since the beginning of the year.
The report stated that gold holdings have remained above 101 million troy ounces since then, even as gold prices have traded between $4,100 and $4,200 per ounce. However, prices remain considerably below the record level recorded in January.
Kazakhstan’s central bank plans to reduce gold’s share of its foreign exchange reserves from 78% to 75% by the end of this year. The bank currently holds 386 tonnes of gold. During the first eight months of the year, it purchased approximately 36 tonnes, making it the world’s fourth-largest central bank gold buyer as of August.
According to analysts, higher yields on US government bonds are making dollar-denominated investments more attractive. Kazakhstan’s central bank therefore intends to reduce its gold allocation and increase investments linked to the dollar. To achieve this, it plans to carry out some gold transactions and sell some of its holdings, reducing its dependence on a single asset.
Meanwhile, silver prices have faced pressure following higher-than-expected inflation figures released last week. According to Kitco, analysts at Heraeus said silver fell below the significant $60-per-ounce level and briefly approached $55, close to its July low.
The stronger-than-expected inflation data had raised concerns that the US Federal Reserve might increase interest rates again. This pushed up yields on US bonds and strengthened the dollar, putting pressure on silver prices.
However, the probability of an interest rate increase has now fallen below 30%. Yields on US bonds and the dollar have also retreated from their recent highs, easing some of the pressure on silver.
Gold and silver prices are therefore being shaped by several competing factors, including interest rate expectations, inflation, currency movements, geopolitical developments and institutional investment flows. With the Federal Reserve’s next meeting approaching, investors and prospective buyers will be watching these developments closely as they assess the direction of precious metal prices.
